Understand the service

What is psychiatric care?

Psychiatric care focuses on evaluating and treating mental, emotional and behavioral conditions. A qualified psychiatric provider considers your symptoms, daily functioning, health history and treatment experiences. RMC’s services include psychiatric evaluation, individualized treatment planning and medication management.

Your care options

What psychiatric care includes

The first step is understanding your situation. An evaluation does not automatically mean that medication will be prescribed. Your provider will discuss appropriate options with you.

Psychiatric evaluationUnderstand the whole picture

Discuss symptoms, when they began, how they affect your life and your health and treatment history. Your provider may ask about sleep, mood, relationships and current medications. The assessment helps clarify clinical needs and possible treatment options.

Treatment planningDecide on the next steps

Your provider discusses findings and recommends a plan based on your needs. Options may include medication, therapy, other support or referral. Ask questions about the purpose of treatment and how progress will be reviewed.

Medication managementReview benefits and concerns

When medication is part of the plan, follow-up visits review symptoms, functioning, benefits and side effects. Your provider can discuss adjustments when clinically appropriate. Take medication as prescribed and speak with the prescriber before changing or stopping it.

Coordinated careConnect the parts of your support

Psychiatric care may be combined with therapy or other services. With the appropriate permission, the care team can share relevant information and coordinate recommendations. Each service has its own role in your treatment plan.

Finding the right support

When to ask about psychiatric care

These are conversation starters, not diagnoses or a guarantee of a particular specialty. RMC will help identify a clinician whose training, age range and focus fit your needs.

  • Mood or anxiety symptoms affecting daily life
  • Symptoms that persist or change over time
  • Questions about a prior mental health diagnosis
  • A need to review current psychiatric medication
  • Concerns about medication benefits or side effects
  • A recommendation from a therapist or another healthcare professional
Your first steps

What to expect.

01

Prepare for your evaluation

Bring your medications, relevant records and a description of your concerns. Tell the provider about medical conditions, allergies and other treatments.

02

Discuss options

Review the assessment and ask about treatment choices, expected benefits, potential risks and follow-up needs.

03

Follow up and communicate

Attend recommended follow-ups and report changes or concerns. If you need a refill or have a medication question, contact the office before you run out.

Before you get started

A little preparation helps the team understand your needs.

  • List prescription medicines, over-the-counter products and supplements.
  • Bring prior evaluations or treatment records when available.
  • Note symptoms, changes and questions you want to discuss.
  • Ask the office about required forms, coverage and appointment format.
A little more clarity

Common questions.

Will I have to take medication?

Not every evaluation leads to a prescription. Your provider discusses recommendations with you based on the assessment, your medical situation and preferences.

What is the difference between a therapist and a psychiatric provider?

Therapists primarily provide counseling. Psychiatric providers assess mental health conditions and may prescribe and monitor medication within their professional scope. RMC can help you understand which service fits your request.

How soon will medication work?

Response varies by medication and person. Your provider will discuss what to expect and when to follow up. Let them know about side effects or worsening symptoms rather than adjusting treatment on your own.

Is a prescription guaranteed at my appointment?

No. Treatment and prescribing decisions depend on the clinical evaluation. An appointment, prior prescription or insurance eligibility does not guarantee a particular medication.
